Victoria started crying. "I gave up Duncan for adoption because his father was violent. I didn't want him to grow up in such an environment. But all these years I have never forgotten him. I watched him go to school, watched him getting on the bus...as if it felt that he was part of my life." Luke spoke: "But watching the boy wasn't enough? You actually wanted a piece of him?'' "Don't you say it like that! You don't know what it was like." A silence... "When I got that job offered at his school, I was happy as hell. But I didn't fish for it. It just came on my path, like it was...meant to be somehow. Duncan and I had the most wonderful conversation and... we became closer." "Did you ever tell him that you are his mother?" Victoria sighed. "I wanted to. But I couldn't. I loved him too much. And he loved me. I wasn't going to lose him again. Hell, I was gonna quit my job for him it would have come that far!" "But it didn't", Luke said. "It became much worse".

Sam got up again and saw how Victoria cried. She would have felt sorry for her if she didn't know what Victoria had done. After Luke had finished his sentence, Victoria hung her head. Sam noticed how two officers walked into the interrogation room and guarded Victoria out. Sam sighed. Was this the end of the case, finally?

Brian returned to the hallway with a cup of black coffee just in time to see Victoria being escorted out. He checked his watch. Dishonesty always bothered him, especially when people cling to a lie to the bitter end. He was glad he worked for a department full of bright, dedicated people to make sure only the badguys wind up in jail.
