Diana Flack giggled as she saw the expression on Danny Messer’s face. He looked cute; almost scared. She ringed the doorbell.
“Diana, how did I ever let you talk me into meeting your parents?”
“Cos we’re now engaged and I’ve already met your parents.”
“The CSI Annual Dinner doesn’t count.”
“Sure does.”
The door opened and a nice, elderly lady with thick black hair opened the door. “Diana! So good to see you!” she said, hugging her.
“Hi Mom,” said Diana, smiling. She brought Danny closer to her and entered the house. A rather intimidating-looking old man with steely blue eyes looked up from the newspaper he was reading.
“Dad, hi,” said Diana, kissing her father on the cheek.
“How’s my little girl?” he asked.
“Fine.” The she cleared he throat. “Mom, Dad, this is Danny Messer; my colleague from work.”
“Hello Mr. and Mrs. Flack,” greeted Danny rather nervously.
“Hello dear,” said Mrs. Flack warmly.
“We’re engaged,” announced Diana.
“Oh, congratulations honey!” squealed Mrs. Flack, hugging both of them. “When was this?”
“A few days ago,” replied Diana.
“Hey, I remember you,” said Mr. Flack suddenly. “You’re that Danny guy.”
“Yes, I am,” said Danny, feeling more nervous. Diana could just laugh at him.
“Junior and Diana were telling me that you’re a good cop.”
“Junior?”
“Oh, I’m sorry. I mean Don.”
“Oh, right. Well, you heard right.”
They all laughed. Danny felt relieved. As Diana and her mother prepared the snacks, Don Flack Senior talked with Danny on the couch.
“So, you’re the man who stole my little girl’s heart.”
“Er, if you put it that way; yes.”
Mr. Flack laughed and clapped his hand on Danny’s shoulders. Then he suddenly turned serious. “If I ever hear that you’re playing around with my Diana, rest be assured I’m gonna hunt you down and break you just as you broke her heart.”
Danny gulped. “Y-Yes, sir.”
“But seeing you being in the police force, not like any of Diana’s ex-boyfriends, I guess I can cut you some slack. Junior can keep a watch on you and Diana for me.”
At that moment, Diana and Mrs. Flack just entered the living room, carrying a plate of cake and four glasses of orange juice.
“Bonding?” asked Mrs. Flack.
“Yes we were,” said Mr. Flack, grinning. “Weren’t we, Danny?”
“Yes.”
“So, have you two set up a date for the marriage?” asked Mrs. Flack.
“We’re not sure but we want to do it sometime around Christmas,” answered Diana. “It’ll be a lot easier to remember the anniversary date if we had it on Christmas.”
“That would be wonderful,” said Mrs. Flack, smiling. She turned to Danny.
“Danny, I heard that you’re one of the bravest cops on the team. You know, chasing down bad guys and stuff like that.”
“Yes he is, Mom,” said Diana, smiling. “Aren’t you, Danny?”
“Just doing my job,” said Danny, smiling back. He was determined not to make eye contact with Mr. Flack. Soon they were chatting away; the three of them, with Mr. Flack awfully quiet.
After half and hour, Diana and Danny left the house. Danny was waiting for her at the porch while she talked to her parents for a little more.
“Well, what do you think of him?” Diana asked her parents.
“He seems like a nice, sweet young man,” said Mrs. Flack, smiling at her daughter. “And a handsome one too, if I may add.”
“Aww, Mom; don’t even go there,” she said, blushing.
“Just take care of yourself, ok I don’t want you getting hurt over another guy.” said Mr. Flack.
“Don’t worry, Dad. I’m all grown-up now. I can take care of this.”
“She’s right, honey. Just let her do what she wants. Besides, Danny seems to really love her; with the way he held her hand and -”
“Or maybe he was just trying to get to second base with her and -”
“OK, I guess I better go!”
Diana kissed both her parents on the cheeks goodbye and walked towards Danny, who was already in the driver’s seat of his car. As they drove off, they waved goodbye to Mr. and Mrs. Flack.
“See, now that wasn’t so bad, was it?” said Diana, looking at Danny.
“Well, it was OK,” said Danny. “You’re Mom’s really nice.”
“Yeah, well, I always preferred her when it comes to introducing boys. And I think she approved of you and let me tell you; it’s hard for her to approve any of the guys I brought home. Did my father talk to you about something?”
“Er… no.”
“Danny?” said Diana, raising an eyebrow.
“OK, OK, he did. Told me that if he finds out I’m messing with you, he’s gonna hunt me down.”
“Don’t worry. He says that to all the boys I brought home.”
“Diana; your dad is an ex-cop!”
As they stopped for a red light, Diana leaned and kissed Danny on the lips. Then they broke away. “Don’t worry; what does he know? He’s just an old man. Besides, Don took the news better than my dad did.”
“Yeah, I guess you’re right. I’ll worry about that after the wedding.” Diana smiled at him, knowing that she couldn’t care less about her father’s opinion. Who’s he to think so, anyway? This was her choice and she is damn proud of it.
