(Chemistry lessons from the one, the only *drum roll* Dr. Hawkes! Yeah, Aiden/Hawkes fic, my first. AND you guys'll be the firsts to see it)
Simple Science
Maddening, that's what it was. The constant drumming of fingers on the table. The hum of the mini-fridge in the corner. The people walking in and out of the room. The voices carrying down the hall.
That was why Sheldon Hawkes rarely left the Morgue to enter the break room. He only went on special occasions, on mandating that he inform one of his colleagues of a finding. This time, he was looking for Aiden. She hadn't responded to any of his pages, and she wasn't answering her cell phone.
He figured she was in the building.
"Hey, Hawkes. Rejoining the living?" Flack was standing just inside the break room door, and Sheldon could see Aiden sitting at the table. He sighed at Flack's little joke, and gave a small smile. All he wanted to do was talk to Aiden. That was it, a simple errand.
"Detective Flack," he said, squeezing past into the room. He stood near the table, putting his hands palm down on it. "Aiden, I think I found something you're gonna want to see."
Aiden stared at him for a second, then she tossed the remains of her sandwich into the trash and followed him into the hallway. They walked side by side to the morgue. They stood across form each other, the body in between them. Sheldon removed the sheet and looked down at the chest.
"See it?" he asked. pointing to faint white lines on the boy's chest. "Scars."
"They look like they say something," Aiden said. She leaned down to get a better look, and then she smiled. "This really helps us."
"What does it say?" Sheldon asked. He already knew, but he wanted to hear Aiden say it, he wasn't sure why.
"'Never Forget Me,'" Aiden recited. She had flipped open her phone and begun to dial. She held it up to her ear for only a moment before she spoke. "Hey, Danny. What'd it say in that girl's diary again? Right, bring her back in here. Thanks."
She hung up and Sheldon put the sheet back over the body.
"Danny's going to do the questioning. Good eye, Hawkes," Aiden said. She turned to leave, but Sheldon had moved around the table and grabbed her arm. She turned to look at him, a curious look crossing through her eyes.
He kissed her. It was a moment, only that. One moment their lips were together, the next they were searching each other's eyes for traces of regret.
"Why'd you. What," Aiden tried to speak. Sheldon put a finger to her lips.
"Why'd I what?" Sheldon asked. A mischievous grin, one Aiden knew all too well, crossed his face.
"Could've waited 'til we weren't int he morgue," she said, laughing. Sheldon laughed, too. Letting her leave the room.
It was science at its greatest.
