kinda following Mystics footsteps, here. She asked the question how we spend christmas. I'm curious how people spend new years eve. In the Netherlands it's a huge 'party'. People here like the change of the year just as much as christmas. Their will probably a lot of fireworks and a lot of food. We actual have a real food-tradition in the Netherlands, but I don't know how to translate it into English, because I don't believe there is a word for it. Literally translated it's 'oil balls'. It's a sort of doughball, with raisins, currants and sometimes pieces of apple. We always have them on new years eve (actualy I don't know why it's called 'new'years eve, cause here, we celebrate it on the last night of the year) anyway, we drink it together with champagne (strange combination ) were will you be on december 31th? Or what traditions do you have?

I also spend it on the 31st of December (doh, I live in the Netherlands too, just like you Christy) and we too eat the 'oliebollen' (Christy said 'oil balls', according to the dictionary it's called 'fritter') and drink champagne. We watch the clock RTL4 is broadcasting until it's 00:00 and then we wish eachother a happy new year and we kiss eachother and stuff. We pop the champagne bottle and drink a glass of champagne (my bro doesn't, he doesn't like champagne) and then we go outside for the fireworks. My brother has a friend who got him some real good (illegal) Belgian fireworks and he ordered some legal fireworks too. We wish all our neighbours a happy new year and stuff and we watch the fireworks and we let off our fireworks too and when we're through all the fireworks, we get back inside our house and I send text messages to all my friends wishing them a happy new year. My mum and I empty the bottle of champagne (yum!) and then around 03:00 we all go to bed. According to the Dutch law we're can buy our own fireworks, but not import it from Germany or Belgium. But, since both Germany and Belgium have less strict laws on fireworks, stuff you buy there is much better. We can let off fireworks from 10:00 am on December 31st until 05:00 am on January 1st. And since I'm 16, I'm officially allowed to drink soft alcoholic drinks (like beer, wine, champagne), have to wait 2 more years before I'm allowed to drink hard liquor like whiskey and stuff. You also can't get any fireworks when you're under 16, so I have to go with my bro when he's going to pick up his fireworks from the stores. You can only do that on 28, 29 and 30 December.

woohw, that Belgium firework will probably give a nice thing to look at ! We also have a little bit of firework but just a little bit. My mother is not very fond of firework, my father kind of doing it for those who do like it (like me ) my little brother is a bit affraid (he always puts his fingers in his ears) and my sister doesn't realy care I think. But I realy like it, so that's why we have a little bit. I already have had my first 'fritter' this year (thanks for looking it up scorpii, I couldn't find the word in my dictionary) it tasted good, but I think I already have had enough for this year But scorpii, you say you have to wait for two years, before you can go drink the 'heavy'stuff, Don't mind me by asking, but how old are you then? I thought you were already about 18 years old... Anyway, today it's december 31th, so everyone a very, very happy new year, with a lot of blessings and love.

Well I'm a quick learner. School tends to bore me and when I understand the subject, I only do half my homework. If I'd put more effort in it, I'd probably gets nothing but 9/10s or higher, but I don't want to put more effort in it, 'cause there are too many things I like to do besides school. Now my grades are mostly 7/10 or higher, have had one insufficient this year, for maths, which was a 4.5/10, but I could do that test again and scored a sufficient then. Only for PE and Latin I get 6/10 most of the time. Okay now I feel a bit like a show-off.... I'm sorry if I seem so!

Shame on me! I just discovered that thread! Well, usually we spend New Year's Eve (which is celebrated in the night of December 31st, too in Austria) - which is actually called "Silvester" here - at home, with my family. Sometimes my aunt or other relatives visit us, too and we play games. There are also some, well, traditions, like "pouring plumb" (it's called "Blei gießen" here). You take a spoon, on which you lie a piece of plumb. Then you hold it above a flame and wait until it melts. Then you quickly pour it into a bowl of cold water and it forms something. All you have to do now is take it out of the water and interpret the form, e.g. if it looks like an angel's wing it means you've got a long life, a coin means you'll have a rich year and so on... The whole evening we listen to the radio, because there always is a "Year's hit parade" with the best songs of the year. A few minutes before midnight, we start to prepare the champagne and the orange juice and my bro usually the fireworks. When only little time is left, there is a traditional countdown (10-9-8-...) and then we shout "Happy New Year!" and clink glasses and kiss. But my favourite tradition is the "waltz dancing". While my bro is shooting of his rockets, we dance on the terrace to "The Blue Danube" - an oh, how I've missed it this year in Berlin. Because this year I've been to Berlin with my boyfriend and we were too late for the big Silvester Party, so we bought a bottle of Champagne and celebrated on the streets looking at the fireworks )

Crazy how some traditions go all over the world. But I never heard something like that 'pouring plumb' before. But who is telling you what your 'shape' means?? Your Grandmother or something, or do you discuss the matter with all of the family? And do you actual believe what the plumb tells you. (Don't get me wrong, it's not that I think it's rubbish, but I just interested, cause I never heard about it )

Actually, there are some symbols that are obvius: for example if you think it looks like a money bag or a coin you could say, you'll gain much money the following year... It's a question of interpretation. Sometimes the whole family discusses, what it looks like and what it could mean. Sometimes there is an instruction sheet, where you can also read some interpretations. But it's more fun to find some by oneself ;-) I don't believe in it (would be like believing in horoscopes, which I don't), but it's a nice tradition... one time I managed to get something that looked like angel's wing - I still got it somewhere on my shelf

oowh, that's cool to be honest, I agree when you say, you don't believe in it. Just like your horoscope. I like to read what they have to tell, but I don't believe. Cause what they tell you the one day, they tell someone else the next..... (try to look for it, you'll see I'm right:P )
