Laura paled when she heard the words "bomb expert" and booby trapped". As if it wasn't bad enough that Brian was kidnapped, now if whoever was sent in to rescue him made one wrong move, he and them would probably die in the explosion. She followed Zora to Luke's office. It looked like he and Hamlet had opened the box that had been on his desk and were about to open a smaller package when Sam had come in and distracted them. Which was good, because given what Zora was about to tell them, they might want to open the package with more than the usual caution. "Guys...Zora has a new bit of information you should probably know about."

Rhia had been in her office the whole night. When she had returned from Brian's flat with no fingerprints, she had stayed to think of something they might have overseen. It had been clear, that his kidnappers would think of fingerprints and wear gloves...but Brian knew they would come searching for him...so he would surely try to "create" traces for them. Her thoughts were running wild. All they now had was a finger of him...with some unknownsubstance. Suddenly Rhia jumped. What did they lab techs find out? She raced to them to find their report ready. Instead of shouting at their stupidity, she quickly took a look. After some seconds she sped off to Luke's office.
"They found...out about...the substance." she wheezed out of breath. "Traces from Rhodymenia palmata - dulse. You only find them in littoral zones...near the sea or big lakes. It's at least a beginning!"
She looked at the others.

Brian couldn't reach the leaking nerve gas tank. He couldn't reach the explosives. He couldn't reach the trap door. He couldn't swear. The gas was making his eyes water so much that he was effectively blind, and his mouth hurt too much to form words.
But he wanted curse, and curse loudly.
The idiot thug never reloaded his gun. There was only one bullet left in the magazine. For the hundredth time, Brian kicked his dead body. He could feel guilty about shooting his jewels and watching him bleed to death later. Right now, he hurt so much he wouldn't be able to describe it even if he could form words.
Brian put the gun to his head. It would be too easy. He'd stop hurting, and the hospitals have one less patient to worry about.
He forced himself to put the gun back down. Suicide was the most selfish thing anyone could do, and Brian couldn't take himself away from his friends, his family, his co-workers...
He sank down into one corner, white-knuckled fingers tightly gripping the gun, and played and replayed the precious memories of the other CSIs and detectives in his head. And when he pictured one in particular, he let go of the gun entirely.
"It'll be alright," he sobbed, "it'll be alright..."
With a loud screeching sound, followed by an ear-popping BANG!, the valve on the tank shot off and hit the wall. Nerve gas rapidly filled the room. Brian had to think quick.
For the second time that night, a shot rang out against the quiet darkness.

When Zora and Laura walked into Luke's office she noticed that they were opening a package. "Yeah I do. I was looking up any known contacts of Emilio's with a criminal past and found out that his brother is wanted for wanted for the 2nd street bombing. So we need to be extra careful."
Zora waited for what she had said to sink in. "I was on my way to start checking on any large purchases of or any stolen bomb materials. Maybe it will lead us closer to the people who have Brian."

Hamlet was pleased to see Luke back. He didn't like being one of the most senior CSIs around on a case like this, it was unpleasant enough already without the additional responsibility. He was sorry to hear about the obvious distress of Brian's parents though.
Anyway, he tried not to get in the way as his boss carefully sliced open the packet, but concern and curiousity meant he couldn't help peering in close.
He wondered if this second note would be as cold and matter-of-fact as the last, and he also wondered what was in the smaller box. Not more body parts he hoped, but he doubted it. The box looked more like the size and shape suitable for holding a cd or dvd. Maybe that was exactly what it was, audio and/or video evidence that Brian was -- for now at least -- still alive.

As no one looked up on the news of the media outside, Sam realised no one had listened to her, all busy with a package. She walked further into the room to watch the package. 'So, more work for me in a bit?' she asked, trying to lighten the mood a bit, knowing it wouldn't work to do that. But she was too worried over Brian to think of it for too long. She missed him. She had liked it when they just stared trough the one-way mirror when Victoria Lester was being interrogated. Maybe she missed him. But she wouldn't think of it for too long. First he'd have to get back to the lab.

"Hey! I talked to you guys!" Rhia screamed desperately. All of her co-workers were standing around a table blocking the sight for her to see what was their object of concentration. As there was no reaction she took a few steps further to gaze over someone's shoulder. She was nearly disappointed, when she found out it was only a box.
"What are you waiting for? Open it!" she fired away feeling her nerves becoming more tense. In her mind she took a deep breath, otherwise she would start yelling around. Calming down a bit she waited for Hamlet to take the next step.

"...look, lady," the officer told Mrs. Weedle, "Your neighbors already admitted their TV was too loud, and they've turned it down. Nobody in this neighborhood owns a gun, it was just the TV. Settle down, please!"
"You callin' me a liar?" Mrs. Weedle snapped.
"No, ma'am, but I am getting sick of a 911 call every time someone on TV fires a shot. My job is to make sure everyone is safe, and I can't do that if I get called down here twice within two hours. There are other neighborhoods out there, ones with actual emergencies!"
"Fine then, when a dead body turns up at that house I'll let the chief know you said that."
"Fine."
The officer got back in his car. He sighed as he looked over his shoulder at the house next door to Mrs. Weedle's. That place had been abandonded for two months now -- nobody wanted to live next door to Mrs. Weedle. "Thank God her only neighbors finally turned down their TV," the policeman mumbled. Now he could get back to the station and have some dinner.
He never saw the muddy tire marks on the abandonded house's driveway, and so drove on in peace, never knowing the horrible events that took place under that very house.

"Shut it!", Luke shouted. Everyone looked shocked. He calmed himself down. "I'm sorry. Don't take it personal, Sam. We are all under a lot of stress here. Let's not put any pressure on others, because we are already pressuring ourself so much. I appreciate all the work you're all putting into Brian. I really do."
Luke wanted to unfold the second note. He gave it to Hamlet though. "You read it. It is direct to you."

Zora was anxious to get working on finding out if she could get somewhere with the bomb lead. However at this moment she wanted to know what was in the box and hoped that it would somehow help with finding Brian. The tension was rising as time passed and Zora knew that each of them was bursting with worry and aggravation.

Sheldon had heard about the second package and made his way to Luke's office. Whatever bodies showed up at the morgue could wait, Brian was still out there. He stood towards the side while everyone crowded around Luke and Hamlet. As much as he wanted to know what was in that box, he couldn't stop his brain from running with so many things it probably wasn't.
He jumped slightly when Luke shouted, and took a step forward when Luke handed the second note to Hamlet. He barely noticed when he started to pray under his breath.

"Er, Ok. I'll read the note." Hamlet wasn't too sure he wanted to, but it seemed everyone was waiting for him to do it.
So carefully he took the sheet of paper from its place wrapped around the smaller box. Slowly, he unfolded it. It contained the same type of message, made entirely of newspaper cuttings, as the last one.
He frowned as he read the pasted letters. Someone jostled his shoulder, obviously impatient to know what it said, so he figured he'd better read it out loud before there was a riot.
[glow=red,2,300] WE STILL HAVE YOUR CSI. APART FROM HIS FINGER OF COURSE. UNLESS YOU WANT MORE BODY PARTS RETURNED IN CARDBOARD BOXES, REMEMBER WE WANT PETER NICOLSON. YOU HAVE 24 HOURS NOW. AS YOU CAN SEE FROM THE ENCLOSED DISC, YOUR CSI IS STILL ALIVE. IF NOT EXACTLY PAIN FREE. DON'T TRY TO RESCUE HIM. OR HE WILL BE PAIN FREE... PERMANENTLY. [/glow]
Hamlet blinked. There were collective indrawing of breaths around the room. Hamlet hardly dared imagine what was on the "enclosed disc". As a long-serving CSI he was used to seeing scenes of horror, but usually they were static, and the victims were generally thoroughly dead by the time he laid eyes on them. Nor were they friends. He had a feeling this was going to be unpleasant in every way.
Everyone else was glancing about nervously too, shuffling their feet or fidgiting in some other way. But they all knew what had to be done.
"I guess we'd better find out what is on the disk then," he said at last.

[Dramatic filler, as for reasons yet unknown to you, there will be no further insights into Brian's side of the story... Yes, I'm evil like that...]
“Death is not the greatest loss in life. The greatest loss is what dies inside us while we live.” --Norman Cousins
“Have the courage to live. Anyone can die.” --Robert Cody
...Mrs. Weedle's throat itched. She took some medicine, and went to sleep. Fourty-six people lived in that neighborhood. Fourty-eight pairs of eyes had been closed by night time.

Sam listened to Hamlet who read the letter out loud. There was a huge tension in the room, everyone tried to read the letter themselves. So did Sam. But she noticed something... What was it? 'Hamlet' She said. 'There's a little red thingy at the side of that letter. Paper cut?'

"Yeah, may be a paper cut," said Hamlet, though right now he felt their first priority was locating Brian, rather than gaining enough evidence to convict his abductors. The DNA results wouldn't be in in time by now to help rescue Brian.
"We'll make sure that goes to DNA. But for now, I'm going to open the box containing the disc. Assuming that is what is inside... "
