Sam thanked Brian for the paper shredder he had brought back to the lab. Now, this was the kind of work she loved!
"Jetzt geht's loss!" she whispered, a sentence she remembered from the Soccer World Cup.
At first glance, there were four colors (counting white as a color); pink, yellow, a bluish kind of paper and the normal white paper. Sam sifted through all of the heap of paper, sorting it color-by-color.
The white heap was considerably larger than the yellow and pink heaps, but the bluish came pretty close in height. Since the yellow heap was the smallest, she started with that.
Two pages of paper it turned out to be, both with a drawing on it that could have been made by Milly. The first one looked like a circus tent with two clowns in front of it. Oh, wait. Sam deciphered the writings above the clowns as 'mommy' and 'daddy'. So this one was definitely made by Milly. It seemed rather normal that Milly visited her aunt and drew something there, so she moved on to the next piece of yellow paper. This also appeared to be a drawing made by Milly. Nothing out of the ordinary when it came to these pieces of paper, but - why would an aunt throw away a drawing her niece had made?
Some of the pink papers, five in total, seemed to also be drawings by Milly, probably added to the letters sent by Milly's mother to Ms. Tingle.
I'm sorry, Val, but we just couldn't let this happen any longer...
Val, you must admit you couldn't take care of Milly...
It's not our fault. We take good care of Milly. She has a mom and a dad and she sees us that way...
Val, I'm sorry.
What was this all about? About Milly, for sure, and something about Val not being able to take care of her... wait a minute. Sam typed in a few words in a database. There it was.
Valery Tingle had been raped almost seven years ago. Back when she didn't have a job, a decent home and... when she was a drug-addict. Could Milly possibly be her offspring, and that mr. and mrs. Blue took care of her?
The bluish papers were bank statements. Seemed like ms. Tingle would get one every week, collect them for a year and then destroy all of them. Pretty weird habit, but could happen. There weren't any amounts of money that looked special over the year, but some were bigger than others. Sam called the bank.
"Good afternoon. New York City Bank, this is Julie speaking. How can I help you?"
"Hello Julie, this is Samantha Noir, I work for the New York City Crime Lab. Listen, I need to know a few things about the account of one of your clients..."
"One moment please, I'll direct you to someone else"
Sam listened for what seemed half an hour to a horrible tune that would get you asleep right away if you weren't totally awake. Finally, someone picked up the phone.
"Geoffrey Crown, how can I help you?"
"Hello, your speaking to Samantha Noir, NYC Crime Lab. Listen, I need some information on the account of one of your clients. Valery Tingle?"
"I'm sorry, miss Noir, but from here I cannot see your ID. Please come over to the bank, then I can help you"
"That's all right. I will finish my work here and then I'll come to you. Shall we say five pm?"
"Five sounds good. See you at five, miss Noir!"
"See you at five, Geoffrey"
That had been a lot of help. Not. The next hour she spent piecing the white pieces of paper together.
55 pages of something that almost looked like a story... Sam arranged the papers in an order that would give her the whole story.
Clown Killers, by V. M. Tingle.
It had been sunny, the last couple of weeks, but a terrible event prevented Mina from seeing it...
Every chapter it got worse, every chapter it became even more depressed... Until where it ended, with Mina and her two sons conspiring to murder the two clowns who had stolen Mina's baby.
Interesting. Sam called Rhia for the results.
"Hey Rhia. I found some interesting stuff. Milly is probably not the victims's daughter but ms. Tingle's. I suggest a DNA test. And I got some very interesting evidence that suggest ms. Tingle hired the two men to kill them, the two men being her sons..."
