ah, sorry for that question: but what does GSR mean? (I only know it for GrissomSaraRomance - and I daresay you don't mean that, right? ;-) )

Gun shot residue you know, the unburned gunpowder that comes out of the end of a gun when it's fired... I think the German translation would be schmauchspur... well, that's what the Wikipedia says, and when it comes to translations of words or expression, the Wiki is most of the times right...

GSR also comes from the action area of a weapon, and is also known to escape from the rear of the gun as the slide is rammed back. As a result, GSR can be found nearly anywhere on the hand, as well as clothing.

Uhm... some kind of special fluid, as is shown in CSI:Miami's "Kill Zone" (season one, forgot the episode number) but it makes it kinda blue... and of course it's always visible under a microscope. But Sam's the one who's investigating the GSR, so don't worry on that

Dyes that react with unburned particles are the most common -- I've seen blue for common GSR, and dark red for liquid parafin traces, that's sometimes the propellant in .50 caliber handguns, rather than gunpowder.
And I think there's a certain kind of light that will make the GSR show up, too. The lesson: thoroughly wash your hands and under your fingernails with soap and hot water after firing a murder weapon, kids.
