Hey ho, guys! I know, today's the last day of the Carnival, but I wanted to ask you if you dressed up and which costume you chosed? How did you celebrate/are you celebrating? This year I wanna be a buttefly ;D and today a couple of people meet to have cocktails in a bar. Maybe we're going dancing, too, afterwards. But everyone in town (okay that's slightly overrated...) will be dressed up and I love to see the costumes of other people. Today also everyone in schools (who likes) can go to school in a costume. We always did this, and it was great fun so, your turn now!

Well, in the Netherlands only the provinces beneath the Great Rivers (that's how we call them - Rijn (Rhine), Maas (Meuse) and Waal (Waal)), our 'Southern Provinces', mainly Brabant and Limburg, celebrate carnival, or, as we here call it, carnaval. Here too, people dress up and celebrate and drink lots and lots of beer. I've never really been to a carnival celebration in the Netherlands (though I live in South-Holland from where it only takes about an hour to drive to Roosendaal which is the closest city for a decent carnival celebration. But here in South-Holland we know something as the 'Summer Carnival' which is much more like the Brazillian carnival. Mainly in Rotterdam the Summer Carnival is celebrated, with a lot of music (e.g. steel drums and stuff - all caribbean-like bands and music) and dancers. I've also never been to the Summer Carnival celebration in Rotterdam (cos then it's so crowded there that you either need to take the train from Amsterdam Central Station or perhaps even Antwerpen CS) but in the village where my dad lives, Oostvoorne, there's also a Summer Night, which is one night of only Caribbean music and dancers and a LOT of beer. That's great.

That sounds nice to me! and I like the idea of celebrating in the warmth better here in Austria we call it "Fasching" or "Karneval". funny, everyone changes a syllable

Haha yeah I guess that's why Rotterdam and Oostvoorne's got the Summer Festival/Night. Hmm I guess it has to do with the prononciation...

Yeah, but it's interesting. In English it's called carnival, you spell it carnaval and here we name it carneval. Very interesting! ;-)

Hmm yes indeed. Maybe somewhere else it's called carnuval Although, I'm pretty sure there are people here in the Netherlands who'd call it carnuval or something like carnuhval on MSN cos we pronounce an 'u' sometimes as, well, as I think you pronounce that 'e' in carneval. And an 'uh' in the middle of a word or at the end we always pronounce like that... though it's no official spelling
