Brian turned off the music. He got something. Taking his laptop with him, he strolled back into the house to speak with Doreen. "Hey, according to my trusty computer here, the suspect was most likely in a Ford F350, based on images of tire marks outside the house. Do the intersections around here have any cameras watching them that we could take a look at?"

Rhia hurried to fill Sam in. "Well...we found that guy in a pool of blood in his living room. But we found out that he wasn't killed there but in the bathroom, which nearly was sterile. We also found the murder weapon, which is a knife. And the Doc suggested it was a kind of hara-kiri...you know the ritual Japanese suicide, where you are aided by a second. Well...and we found that note which said: "Forgive me, Sam." So, I'm trying to find out, if he knew a Sam. Maybe a brother of his, a friend, a relative... well, I don't have any clue yet..."

"Hmm. Quite sounds like the Miami-murder... what was the victim's name?"

Rhia took a piece of paper out of her pocket. "Well...his driving licence said Noah O'Connor. Does this name mean anything to you...?"

Sam shook her head. "No, I'm sorry." Then she suddenly remembered. "O'Connor, you said? The last name of the victim in Miami was also O'Connor... maybe they are related..."

Brian drove to the intersection that connected the neighborhood road to the main street. And, again, he got lucky. He noticed that the intersection had two cameras watching it. He needed to download the video from those cameras -- he might catch a glimpse of the getaway vehicle!
He quickly called up Luke. It rang once, twice, thrice... no answer. Brian waited for the beep, and left a message: "Hey, Luke, it's Brian. I need a warrant to download video from the traffic cameras by the vic's neighborhood right away! Call me back as soon as you get this message!"

Charlie interrupted Sam and Rhia's conversation. "Hey. Found something. Piece of paper's just common paper, but it's got a part of a watermark. Oh, and it's written with fountainpen ink." "Okay" Sam said. "And what have you found on the writer?" "Male, right-handed, in his thirties or forties. Educated and has commited multiple crimes." "Right. Any hits on the watermark?" "Yeah. It's from a law firm. Costero." "Costero..." Sam turned back to Rhia. "Well. A right-handed, educated but criminal man in his thirties or forties, in a law firm, writing with a fountain pen. Could be anybody." "Yes" Charlie interrupted again. "But you're searching for a Parker, the 51 fountain pen, Mark III, which has been in production since 1969. I'm guessing he might have obtained it when he started working there." "Yeah. Well, let's say he's in his mid-forties, the older end of your estimation. Then, he's born early sixties, so it must've been in the eighties he started working there. Anything particular in colors?" Sam asked. Charlie nodded. "Indeed. It can have every color Parker produces the pen in." "Right. Well. Rhia, I guess you may have a clue here. And I think have heard of a law firm called Costero before."

Rhia had been listening to Charlie and Sam and taken some notes. "Costero... somehow I got a feeling that I've heard that name before. Did you think that the vic wrote this? He's 27...but he was wearing his watch on the right wrist...so he probably was left-handed...." Rhia remembered him lying on the floor, his arms stretched to the side. "Well, thanks, anyway. You'll hear from me, if I find something out." she winked at Sam and left the office.
Costero...Costero...Do I really know the name...? Lost in thoughts Rhia went in her office and sat down in front of her computer. She started researching, knowing that she would find something...

Sam and Charlie watched Rhia leaving the office. Then Sam turned to Charlie. "Charlie, if the man has commited crimes before, what crimes do you mean then? White-collar or more violent?" "Dunno. If it's white-collar, he had to be in the database. He wasn't" "Right. Thank you." She also left the office to find - well, she didn't know who she looked for. She grabbed a cup of coffee and went back into the QD office to grab one of the files. Charlie had the note enlarged, projected on a screen. Just when she wanted to turn around to leave the office, she noticed something. She recognized the handwriting. And suddenly she remembered someone who always wrote with a Parker 51 Mark III. But no, could hardly be. After all, HE stayed in Miami. She shook her head and took her cup of coffee and the file to the entrance hall. She sat down on a bench and opened the file. She ignored the wind that she sometimes felt when someone opened the door and she read the file. Old cases were boring, but she needed to do something when she couldn't work on actual cases.

Brian checked his watch for the hundredth time. He had no patience for this today. He looked around, and then grabbed his laptop and went behind one of the traffic light poles, in the cameras' blind spots. He took a knife from his pocket and pried open the panel in the pole. He hooked up his laptop to the pole and began downloading the video feeds.
He'll deal with the red tape later. He wanted to find this car, and find it NOW.

Sam closed the file and picked her phone from her pocket to call Brian. She heard the phone on the other side of the connection ring. Then someone picked it up. "Hey, it's me, Sam. How it's going? You have anything?"

Brian responded, "Yes. I'm pretty sure our suspect drives a Ford F350 pickup truck. I'm sifting through footage from the traffic cameras trying to catch a license plate number. It could take a while, though. What have you been up to?"
Brian listened on the phone while carefully reviewing the video feeds for the large pickup truck.

The connection went dead. Brian glared at his cellphone, completely unhappy with how slow everything had been going. He turned his full attention to the video feed, and was glad he did
He saw the dark red pickup truck. It was a Ford F350, with two occupants. He paused the video and zoomed in on the license plate. HJP-754. Brian saved the image and the video, and entered the number into the computer database.
A few minutes later, a name and an adress popped up. Brian tried calling Sam one more time.

Sam felt how her phone was being pulled from her hands. She turned around just to see someone smashing it. "Hey! That was an expensive phone" The man who'd smashed Sam's phone laughed. Sam recognized the laughter. "I see you got a job somewhere else. I thought I'd completely put you out of law enforcement" "Well James, you shouldn't underestimate the power of trust. My former boss trusted my statement. So I got the job here" "Hmm. I wonder whether your new boss knows that the killer from that case never threatened to kill your fiancé. In fact, I wonder if he knows the killer WAS your fiancé." "I suddenly begin to remember why we broke up. What you're doing up here in New York?" "Just taking care of unfinished business. You see, down in Miami I got the wrong O'Connor brother" "Why did you actually hook up with me back then?" "Come on Sam, I'm not stupid. Neither are you. You know how convienient it is for organized crime to have contacts in law enforcement" "Go away James, before I get someone to arrest you" "Oh Sam, you were always so naive" "Get lost, James Costero!" "Very well then. I guess I'll see you soon, Samantha". Sam turned away from him, feeling the anger. Oh, if she would have had the courage to hurt him, she definitely would have had. She just wanted to walk back into the building, when Rhia walked up to her.

...voicemail. Brian hung up. He walked back to his car, past where the detectives and other techs were still comparing notes and brainstorming. "I'm heading back to the lab so we can at least get SOME work done!" he called as he passed by the house. It came out sounding meaner than he wanted it to, but he was in a hurry. He backed up the images to his online server, and tossed the laptop onto the front seat.
He turned on his music, and drove off for the station. Why was nothing getting done lately? What in the world is going on...?
