It was a day like any other winter day in New York. Brian would have been freezing, had he not been sipping contentedly from his mocha espresso. He brough the last of his stuff from his car into his new office. He was sad that Luke and Doreen had left, but at least he had his own place now. Then he walked back into the hallway, about to head on over and help Rhia move into HER office.
That's when he noticed the bulletin board. For that period of time that the Crime Lab had no supervisor, assignments would simply be posted on the bulletin board... it was boring, and not a very efficient way to work, but it helped them through. But Brian noticed two fliers on the board that weren't there just a minute ago. He took them down and brought them into Rhia's office.
"Hey, Rhia, you might want to call Division and let them know you've official moved in as supervisor here. They're still posting our work on the bulletin board in the hallway," Brian said. And then he noticed what was on the fliers.
"Uh, Rhia... These are two separate calls from patrol... each one has found a body in a trunk," Brian said, quickly reading the fliers over.
He said, half jokingly, "What are your orders, O Captain?"
The icy city wind whistled through the city. Brian couldn't keep smiling after his little joke. Today was going to be a rough, rough day...

Myka Sheppard shivered once more as she stood before the front desk of the New York Crime Lab while a woman processed her request. rubbing her hands together she attempted to generate some heat to her hands "um excuse me miss... miss" Myka rolled her eyes and smiled poiletly at the woman "miss Sheppard, I transfered from England. I was meant to report to the supervisor but I don't know where to go. Look this is my first day and I want to make a good impression" Myka declared as the woman gave her a sharp look then folded her arms. "well Miss Sheppard, the SUPERVISOR is currently not reachable.... so your going to have to wait until she can be reached or someone from her team can collect you" the woman snipped causing Myka's smile to tighten then she spun and stomped towards the seating area and sat down with a thud. Wondering if her day could get even worse.

Rhia had been sitting on the chair in front of her desk. The sign on the door outside saying she was supervisor made her feel proud somehow. Still, she couldn't quite believe it, they had made her supervisor... But she felt the loss of Luke. She shivered. Hopefully people wouldn't blame her for his retreat. But then she shook her head. Luke had offered her to stay in touch, in case she needed anything...in the beginning. He had made it quite clear that she was to run the lab on her own some time... She stared out of the window and noticed that winter had started. It was freezing cold outside, but there was no snow...not yet, she thought smiling. She shook off her thoughts, when she heard someone calling out her name.
"Hey, Brian!" she smiled at him. "I was about to call them right now...but I got distracted by these boxes wanting to be unpacked... Right, best thing to do would be to split. It's a shame the other's aren't here already...but wait, today we'll be getting a newbie. A woman called..."
Rhia looked at some papers.
"Myka Sheppard. She should be here any minute now. Maybe you can take her with you? Showing her how thing's are going?"
As she watched Brian, she quickly added: "I know, it's not the favourite job doing the babysitting, but you're my best CSI...she can learn a lot from you!"
She broke, then continued. "In the meantime I'll be driving to the other scene. We'll stay in contact."
She nodded at him, then she quickly wrote a note on a sticky paper and sticked it onto the bulletin board. It said: "As soon as you arrive, call me. Rhia"
"So, the others will know what to do when they come. I'll need support."
She turned to Brian. "Well, let's get started..." she said with a smile.
When they started to go outside, Rhia noticed a young woman sitting on the beach looking at them. She came to halt in front of her. "Myka Sheppard?" As the woman stood up and nodded, she smiled. "Well, I'm Rhiannon Nerice, your supervisor." they shook hands. "I'm glad you're already here. We're short of people. So I'll send you with Brian. He'll explain everything on the way!"

The crisp, evening December breeze swept gently across Victoria Woods face as she saw the New York Crime-Lab for the first time. The concrete building was both intimidating and yet welcoming; she smiled and walked in. The New York Crime-Lab is a place of immense activity and suppressed excitement as people bustled past her. Tori confidently navigated her way to the main Crime-Lab - the epicenter of all the hub and excitement. A man and two women were talking in an office, one of the woman was sitting at the desk reading a report and then suddenly walked towards the door , stopped and shook hands with the other woman. Tori walked quickly towards the door hoping to intercept the group, hoping, that one of them was her new supervisor, and boss. "Excuse me, Ms. Nerice..." for the first time noticing her own English accent, "I'm CSI Victoria Woods, the new ballistics specialist." she held out her hand hoping for someone to shake it smiling timidly. Shit. Tori thought, I'm making a bloody fool out of myself on my first day.

Rhia had just finished her sentence, when another woman approached her.
"Hi Victoria. I may call you Victoria? I'm Rhia and I happen to be your supervisor..." she shook her hand and winked at her smiling. "Well, it'll be a busy first day for you. Two dead bodies in a trunk. Brian and Myka - she's also a newbie - will process one and the two of us will take over the other one. So, I'm sorry I can't show you the lab first, but the field is calling. So, let's get going."
She turned to face the exit giving Brian a short nod. While they were walking to the car Rhia talked to Victoria, her partner for today.
"So, where do you come from exactly? No offense meant, but you don't sound like you're from anywhere nearby...?"

Brian couldn't suppress an amused smile. Not one, but two transfers from the UK? Very interesting! "Well Ms. Sheppard, my name's Brian Shefkowitz, but you can call me Brian. Actually, you can call me whatever you want, I honestly don't mind!" Brian hoped she didn't notice his affluence for making stupid jokes. "Uh, anyways," he continued, "I guess I can finish blabbing on the way to the scene. I got the adress right here, and you're riding with me today."
Brian and Myka got into his car, and Brian grinned as he put on his mirrored sunglasses. Being that he was male, he couldn't help but be proud of the fact that all the other CSIs drove SUVs, and here he had a shiny gunmetal-colored Mustang. He rummaged around in the trunk and pulled out a silvery suitcase. He took a marker and wrote SHEPPARD on it. "Here you go, Ms. Sheppard. This is your crime scene kit. Just about everything you need to do the job."
Brian started the car, and sped off towards the scene.
"Unfortunately for you, I love my own voice, but I'm going to be quick about me and let you do some talking. I love guns, and am quite adept with firearms of all kinds. However, my real expertise lies in computers and breaking the rules. But don't worry about that last one, it's hardly ever my fault. Anyways, I transfered here from Los Angeles, California, and I love it here. Well, except for... uh.. nevermind about that. What about you?"

Myka bit her lip as Brian rambled on, offering a smile for his jokes. She almost hugged the kit to her, she missed feeling a kit in her hand.
"I transfered from England, needed a change from the Met police.... they didn't have enough strange deaths for me" Myka smirked and looked to Brian. "Mostly I just felt I needed to get out of there... bad memories" Myka told him before looking at the passing scenery. "So just to get my self ready what are expecting when we reach the crime scene, I'm still a girl and would like to save my shoes if i can" Myka said lightly with a smile.

"According to the report from dispatch, they found a body in the trunk of an abandoned vehicle, no suspects yet... which probably means the victim is the registered owner of the vehicle. That's about the extent of my knowledge on this one. Oh, and uh, it's going to be out a ways past the suburbs in a wooded area."
Brian looked at her, looked at the road. He opened his mouth, then closed it. He waited a few moments, thinking.
"...Miss Sheppard? I know what it's like to have bad memories. I want you to understand that we're all here for you if you ever need someone to talk to. And maybe you'll be around when I'm ready to talk about mine."
Brian was relieved that his sunglasses hid the turmoil within his eyes. While he was glad that he was no longer angry about that case, he was worried about what would come next. Depression? Oh, he could never remember those kinds of things.
But before he knew it, he pulled up to the crime scene. Just off the road in a lightly wooded area sat a dull red sedan, its trunk open and flies buzzing about. Two squad cars were parked on either side, with lights flashing. The crime scene tape was up, although nobody was around for miles except four officers standing upwind from the sedan. Brian got out of the car with Myka, removing his sunglasses.
"Why don't you process, and I'll snap the pictures?" Brian asked, guessing she probably wanted to get some decent work done.

Tori Woods drove to the crime-scene alone listening to loud music. She felt awkward working with her boss. Would Rhea be examining the evidence or would she be analyzing her? Half an hour later she arrived at a grubby street surrounded by grubby buildings. God what a shit hole, and here we go , she took off her long trench coat and brought out her kit and walked towards the vehicle. The smell of decomp filled the air. A hand was lying limp out of the truck's trunk. She took out her phone and dialed a number from her address book. The phone was answered immediately by a man. "Hi, I'm Detective Victoria Woods and I need some info on a vehicle it's license plate plate is <she recited the number>" she waited, "OK, a mister John Peterson? Thank you." she said and hung up. She had seen worse bodies. The victim had been stabbed twice in the stomach and shot in the head. Close range, personal. She put on here gloves and photographed the victim's position. She started to closely examine the stab wounds long blade. She heard something behind her, she spun around the face the person behind her gun in one hand, knife in the other. It was Rhea. She was pointing a gun in her boss's face. Tori put back her weapons. "I'm so sorry now you think I'm jumpy."

But Rhia only smiled. "You would like to hear how I behaved on my first day here... I was late and thought I'd sneak into the house not to disturb anyone....of course the other CSIs noticed me and thinking I was a bad guy drew their guns... So, I'm quite used to it, you know..."
She shook off a laugh. "I'm sorry, I just had to clear some things by phone. That's why I'm a bit late. It's... I'm not yet used to all this supervisor-things, but I'll get it worked out... So, what do we have so far? Uhuh, you got the murder weapon...or at least one of it. Looks like he has not only been stabbed, but also shot. Would be interesting to know if it was one person who did this and if he was first stabbed, then shot or the other way round... "
She eyed the body in the trunk, putting on her gloves. "You already checked the knife for fingerprints?" she asked without taking her eyes from the victim. She examined the wounds closely, but being no doc she couldn't say much about it, except that the shot was fired from close distance. She swabbed the remainder of powder and put it away. Then Rhia went further to examining his hands. "Look, look, look. There are signs of defense. Some of his fingernails are broken, some are bloody. Maybe we can find some epithelial layer?"
She processed one nail after another, also taking samples of the blood. When she looked again at the hand, she noticed some blood drops in a strange constellation. When she turned his wrist around, she noticed a sign.
"Look. He was kinda signed with his own blood. But what is this? Can you...can you take a photo of it, please?"
The sign looked as if made with a very thin needle. It was an ornament - a pentacle. "What does this mean?" Rhia murmured to herself as she took out her phone to call Brian. There was the dial tone.

"What?" Tori said, "these are my own personal arms, never be too careful. I've photographed the body's position and I'm just about to print the car before I take it to the garage. The car's registered to a John Peterson, lives just off central park. I'm gonna take a photo of the victim's face and E-mail to my guy at the lab for him to visually compare to the driver's license." she took a photograph of the pentacle "Definitely postmortem done by a lefty like the Boston strangler or Jack the Ripper...and me. Which would you like to do, perimeter or car?" she looked up and saw Rhea was on the phone. Rhea pointed at the trunk of the car and Tori made a "thumbs up" and to look around the perimeter.

Brian felt his phone vibrate, and put down his camera and answered.
"What's up, Rhia? A pentacle? Wow, Rhia, very nice find! I do happen to know about pentacles -- they are often associated with cults because of their roots in pagan religions and magic lore. Sometimes it is used as a symbol of protection, sometimes as a focus through which spiritual energy can be channeled... but it can also be a very significant signature. Make sure you take very detailed photographs of that." Brian said over the phone.
He covered the receiver long enough to ask Myka what she had just found, for he had noticed that she was focusing intently on something.

"Well, thanks, Brian. When you find something similar at your body, lemme know." Rhia hung up and turned to Tori again. "Sorry for mixing things up. I'll take some photos of the pentacle." she said shortly, but not unfriendly when she fumbled with her camera to bring it into right position. When she zoomed in on the bloody wrist, she noticed something shining on the floor of the trunk, just at the side of the victim. Carefully she picked the needle up with her tweezers and put it away in a bag. Then she started searching through the pockets of the victims. Rhia found his wallet as well as his mobile.
Something to do for Brian... she thought smiling and bagged both of her findings. Finally she went around the car.
"Only tracks of the car itself... no footprints on anyone...which is very strange..." she murmured to herself, capturing the whole scene on film.
"Well then, Tori. Have you found anything?" she shouted over to the other woman. "Let's pack togehter. Those two nice officers..." she nodded at two policemen watching over the scene. "...will wait until the body is fetched and brought to Sheldon. We'll have to inform his family." She thought of the photo she had found in his wallet. A woman and two small babies. She hoped it had been an older snapshot. "HAve you got the address?" she asked Tori, while getting in her car.

Myka didn't even notice Brian talking to her, she found something glinting up at her. digging through her kit she pulled tweezers out and plucked the object to find a solid piece of metal the size of her thumb's finger nail and had a sharp pointed edge to it.
"How did the vic die... becuase this looks like.." she trailed off turning the piece of metal and saw the other side had engravings along one side "it's the tip of a blade" she stated out loud narrowing her eyes at the object again.

Brian stepped up and snapped a photo of it before going up to the trunk to peer at the body. He made out a clear bullet hole in the middle of the man's head, execution style. He started snapping photos, and then he noticed knife wounds. The shirt was slightly cut up, and he saw defensive knife wounds on the man's arms. He was a bloody mess, but stuffed into the trunk in such a position as Brian couldn't tell if the wounds inflicted on his torso were offensive or defensive.
But Brian knew he couldn't touch the body until the M.E. had pronounced him dead, and the M.E. was still on his way from the other scene. So Brian would have to wait to get a better look at the body.
"There's a bullet wound to his head, but it looks like he was attacked with a knife before he was shot... but it looks defensive; he may have fought back, Ms. Sheppard. Maybe some of these blood drops belong to our suspect. Take a sample of every spatter you see, hopefully we'll get lucky." Brian stated. He desperately wanted to move the body to check for a pentacle, but all he could do while he waited was photograph the evidence that Myka was digging up.
