"Wake up, honey". Luke could recognize this voice out of millions. It's the voice of Karen, his wife and above all, soulmate. "What time is it?" "8 AM. You're perfectly on time". It is always nice to wake up with the sound of her voice. Lucas jumped out of bed and slowly walked to the bathroom: "Today I am going to meet the new CSI's and detecives. It's always exciting to meet new members of the team..." Karen suddenly grabbed him by his shoulders and turned him around. He saw that she's been crying. Luke stroke through her long dark hair. "Hey, what's going on?" She said: "There is something you should know..."

"Well, what is it?" "I eh... I don't think I can do this anymore." "What?" "Pretending nothing happened." There was a very uncomfortable silence. "Honey, what happened is in the past. You are fine now, WE are fine now. At least that was what I thought." Karen looked away and wiped a through more tears away: "I slept with him again". Suddenly Lucas felt an anger that rose above him. He hit her. "Bitch".
When Luke stept into his car, he felt a lot of regret. Regrets for not being home enough, regrets for not giving Karen enough attention and regrets for hitting his wife in the face. But mostly he was angry. He knew he could not use this when he was at work. He left a message on Karen's cell phone: "Karen..we need to talk. I'm sorry".
He boosted up the radio's volume: "It has been reported that 4 students and 2 teachers died as result to the fire that broke into the Mayflower Highschool around 11 o'clock. The firemen...."

How long have I been working on this case, Luke asked himself. 60 hours in a row? He called Karen a few times and they both acted like nothing happened. Now he went home and had to face her again. Though he really wanted to see her, he knew that they would probably be talking all night about their problems. And that was something he defenitely was NOT looking forward to.
"Hey honey, I'm home" "Hey!" "We eh.. we closed the case." "Good." Like always, Karen didn't ask about who did it, what was the evidence etc. It just wasn't really her thing, and he accepts that. Luke couldn't blame her, he never asked her anything about the fasion company where she works. Now he came to think about it, it might be weird that they can't talk about their jobs to each other. His parents in Holland had a store together. You might think that working together and living together might destroy a marriage, but his mother once said that it was only easy, because they both know what they are doing during the day, and understand how hard it is.
Karen just couldn't wait to say it: "Luke, I eh.. I made an appointment with a marriage counsellor." "A marriage counsellor?" "Yeah, so we can figure out what's really bothering us." Luke suddenly spoke louder than he wanted to: "What? Why do women always need to talk??" "Look, if you don't want this relationship to work, then just say so. But I think we need to talk about my tendancy to eh.." "Cheat", Luke reminded her. She went on: "Yes, and about your aggressive behaviour."
Luke looked at her and couldn't believe what he heared: "Excuse me? Agressive behaviour. Please! Just because I hit you that one time. That's ridicilous." He walked to the fridge: "I assume that since I'm getting a beer now, I must be an alcoholic, don't I?"" Karen looked away. "You know what, we'll talk about this tomorrow during the counselling. I am going to bed now, are you coming soon?" "Tomorrow? In case you don't know, I have shift tomorrow and also need to go to court." "Oh, I called your supervisor Newland and asked her if you could be missed for 2 hours, she said it was fine." Karen walked in the bedroom.
Luke was angry, but he didn't feel like reacting to it. How did she dare to call his supervisor without asking him first? Of course Ann Newland, didn't mind, who could say no to a sweet woman like Karen? Luke thought about what a nice time he had with Doreen in the coffeeshop. It's like she has to say one thing, and he exactly knows what she means. And she was goreous, no doubt about that. Ah whatever, she's 11 years younger and he's married. He was kind of jealous about how Doreen could live her life, with no restrictions.
Luke thought about Doreen for a while, but then came to the conclusion that there is no one that was as great as Karen, and there is nothing which he would put their marriage on the line for. He decided to say that during the counselling tomorrow.

"Come in", the counseller said.
Luke couldn't believe he and Karen were actually gonna do this. If anyone would have said this six months ago, he'd laugh in the person's face. "So, Luke and Karen. My name is Angela Jones. Could you first start to tell me what your problems exactly are." Luke answered: "Well, Karen blames me for not being home enough and giving her the attention that she needs, so she decided to look for that attention in innapropiate places." "You cheated on Luke, Karen?" "Yes. It's a guy named Mark. He's a model at the fashion company where I work. I slept with him two times." "And Luke, what is your job?" "I'm a crime scene investigator. I'm one of the leads and hope to become a supervisor one day. It takes up a lot of my time." "Well let me tell you Angela, it takes up a lot of his time. Sometimes, he isn't home for 3 days straight!", Karen stated. Angela asked: "Were do you sleep when you're not home, Luke?" "At work, or sometimes at a collague that lives at the other side of New York." "What kind of collague? A female collegaue?", Angele asked. "I don't see why that matters. I am not the one that is cheating here." Karen and Angela both stared at him. "Look, there is nothing or no one that I would feel important enough, where I would jeopardize this marriage for! I love Karen, okay. I love her. But appearently that's not enough for her..."

Luke continued: "I don't see why all eyes are on me at the moment, because clearly, I am not the one with a problem." "Oh but you are", Angela said. "You are." Luke gave her a weird look. She continued: "So Karen, do you justify your cheating with Mark? You obviously hurt Luke." Now, Karen decided to completely strip herself down: "You know who Luke is? Luke is the sweetest guy in the world. And it hurts me so much that he isn't there when I need to talk, blow off some steam or just wanna cuddle. And when he is home, he rather grabs a beer, catches the game and goes to bed. Mark means nothing to me. I work with him a lot and we totaly hit it off at photo shoots or parties. He's goodlooking, sure. But he's not Luke."
Luke didn't know what to say. Angela decided to say something: "Luke. Can you forgive Karen for her actions?" "Yes I can. But she should also be able to forgive me. I'm doing a profession with all my heart and soul, which I am meant to do. And I am trying to make good money for the two of us. I don't like to be fooled around with, Karen. I'm sorry but...maybe I just can't be the Luke that you want me to be."

Luke and Karen had been arguing for the rest of the week. Those four (yes, four!) instant counselling sessions didn't work. After their last session they went home, and Karen was the one who dared to say it first: Let's call it quits.
The entire night they cried, brought up good memories, slept together for the last time and decided what was going to happen now. Karen offered to leave the house and stay at her sisters until she found her own place. She admitted that she was the one that screwed up in the end, so she should leave.
The morning after Luke went to work, and when he returned in the afternoon, Karen was gone. She had packed her stuff (and frankly also some of his stuff, but he didn't care). He decided to drive to a bar, a bit far away, so he couldn't ran in to anybody. He wanted to be alone. He bought a pack of cigarettes, which he regreted later. He quit 5 years ago, because he and Karen wanted to get pregnant. Unfortunately they weren't able to have any children. Maybe it would have worked out if they had a child to take care of. Or it would have been the cause for even more disagreements. But he didn't want to think about that. He drank a beer, and another one, and another one. He slowly smoked two cigarettes and gave the package away to a homeless man later. He didn't want to look sad, selfpitied or depressed. He had to start a new life, as a single man.
