Doreen Messer looked around her apartment in disgust. A party has just ended in her apartment. Plates in the sink unwashed, rubbish everywhere, practically everything was everywhere all over her apartment. Sighing, she stacked up the remaining plates and began washing them in the sink.
When she told people that she's a CSI, nobody believed her; saying that she enjoys life and parties too much to be a CSI.
"You? A CSI?" said her friend once in disbelief. "CSIs have responsibilities, Doreen."
Doreen snorted when she recalled her friend's words as well as what other people have said about her. Hasn't she proven herself enough? Hasn't she gone through enough since her parents' divorce? She remembered when she was still a teenager, all the kids teased her cos, unlike Doreen, their parents were still together. They'd tell her things like "My mom bakes cakes every week so that we can eat it as a family" or "My dad is bringing my family and I to Disney Land next month."
Shaking her head, she turned on the radio to listen to some music when she heard the radio broadcaster's news. "A school has been burnt down and...". At that moment, her cell phone rang.
"Messer," she answered. "A school? Sure, I'll be there." She dried her hands, dressed out of the blazer/skirt set that had on (she was going for a briefing) and put on jeans and a short-sleeved t-shirt and put on her CSI jacket. Remembering that her kit was already in her car (to her delight), she locked her apartment door and bolted down the stairs to the carpark where her car was. She got into the car and drove off.

Doreen got back from her apartment. She and Luke have just finished a case and they went to celebrate at a coffee shop. Not the most glamarous way to celebrate the solving of a new case, but she was saving her money to get that brand-new sports car she had her eyes on.
She checked her phone for any voice messages and there was one. She played it back.
"Hello? Doreen? You there?" came a very familiar voice. Doreen froze. She knew this voice very well. It was the voice of her ex-boyfriend, Chris. She listened to the message.
"I guess you're at work," said his recorded voice. "Well, I'm just calling to see if, well, you're free this weekend? Cos I wanna give us another shot at this. Call me. You know my number. Oh, I'm really sorry about what happened that time. I was stupid to do it. Please call back. Bye."
After that he hanged up, Doreen stared at the voice recorder as if it had the answers to her problem. She suddenly remembered the hug that she and Luke wanted to give each other but she shook that thought away from her head.
"Get a grip," she said to herself. "He's your colleague. Maintain a professional relationship with him."
She played back Chris' message, took out her cell phone and dialed his number. Eventhough Chris cheated on her that time, she decided to give him another chance. Besides, Chris IS rather cute. And she hasn't been seeing or dating anyone for quite some time. It was time for her to socialize.
"Hello? Chris? Doreen here. Yeah, I'm free this weekend."

Doreen groaned in her bed. She just caught the flu and fever; not to mention a sore throat. She remembered her older sister nagging her ear off for going dirt biking too long under the hot sun in summer. So she's now on sick leave from her work for a day. It's a good thing her flu and fever are not that serious so she'll be back at work by tomorrow.
She checked her watch. Time to take her medicine. She groggily got out from bed and walked towards her fridge. She opened it and took out the cough mixture and various pills given by her doctor. She swallowed them and shuffled back to her bed. The summer heat was killing her so she turned on the air conditioner.
Feeling the cold wind blowing against her skin, she felt sleepy due to the medicine and after a few minutes, she drifted off to sleep.

Doreen drove to her older sister's, Gina, house. She parked her car and walked up the steps and a small smile played on her lips. Her older sister (by 3 years) was sititing on the doorstep. Gina had called her earlier while Doreen was at the bar.
"Hey," she greeted Gina.
"Hi," replied Gina. She was drunk. "So you brought the keys?"
Doreen fished out a key from her pocket. Gina gave her a spare key to her house in case anything went wrong. "It's here," she said.
"Thank God," said Gina. "Open the door now. I'm having a killer headache right now."
Doreen inserted the key into the keyhole, turned it and the door opened. Gina's house was really nice and well-furnished. Doreen thought of her own comfortable apartment back home and smiled.
"Been living large, eh? How's your job at the private gym?" asked Doreen. Gina works as a personal trainer in a personal gym at some private club. For all Doreen knows, the pay was very high.
"Job's fine. Meet loads of cute buff guys everyday," said Gina, smiling.
"Really? Did you hook up with any of them?"
"Nawp, too busy. But I can help you find a special someone if you want," said Gina, waggling her eyebrows. "Since you dumped Chris, you can look for a new guy."
"Er, actually, I just got back from a date with him before I went to the bar."
"What?" said Gina in disbelief. "Doreen, you said you'll never date Chris again."
"I know but I just decided to give him another chance."
"And?"
"He failed miserably."
"Don't worry, the right guy will come."
"Haha, he'd better come."
"So you want me to hook you up with a guy? Cos there's this adorable punk guy who I think is perfect for you."
Doreen thought of Luke; the way he catched her outside the bar before she fell. She then shook the thought away.
"Nah, it's ok," said Doreen.
"Oooh, is there another guy?"
"I dunno."
"Ah, I see."
"I better go now. I have to come in early for work tomorrow."
"OK. Good night. Thanks, by the way."
"No prob. Night."
Doreen closed the door and walked towards her car. But she saw another car next to hers. The car looks strangely familiar. As sthe driver stepped out, Doreen froze in her tracks.
"Chris? What are you doing here?" she asked.
"I saw you at the bar."
"So? I was just drinking with a few friends."
"I saw you and that guy outside the bar. You know, the one who caught you when you slipped."
"So what? He just saved my ass from getting black and blue."
"I didn't like it."
"You're jealous? For what? First; you and I are so over. Second; Luke and I are just friends. Third; I have to go home now and I don't want you to follow me."
"Oh yeah? What are you gonna do about it?"
"I have friends in law-enforcement and I can call them if you're stalking me."
Chris snorted and walked into his car and drove off. Doreen just stood there. Her hand was around the handle of the gun hidden behind her back. When Chris drove off, her fingers left the gun slowly. She sighed, got into her car and drove back to her apartment.

Doreen closed the door to her apartment. She just got back from the lab and was feeling tired. She changed out of her clothes and got into a pair of shorts and a t-shirt. She grabbed a can of coke, a bag of chips, turned on the TV and watched her favorite TV show. The doorbell rang after a few minutes. She went and open the door and found her best friend, Shelby, standing there.
"Hi!" she said, hugging Doreen. "I just got back from the bar and I decided to drop by here."
"It's good to see you, Shelby. Come in. I just got back from the lab."
Shelby came in and sat next to Doreen on the couch.
"So, I heard that you seem to have an interest in one of the guys in your lab," said Shelby, making Doreen spit out her coke.
"Where did you hear that from? she asked, wiping her mouth.
"Oh, a girl has her sources," said Shelby, smiling. "Now, tell me more about that guy."
"You don't really wanna know..."
"Aw, c'mon! We're best friends and best friends never hide stuff from each other."
"Oh, alright. But I'm not giving you his name."
"Fine. Spill."
"Well, he's nice and funny. Not to mention smart and quite good-looking."
"Go on."
"But you see, he just got seperated from his wife and I dunno if now's a good time to start a relationship with him."
"I understand. You wonder if he's ready to start a new life. But at the same time, you don't want it to be a rebound relationship."
Doreen nodded, sighing. "Plus, he's 11 years older."
"What?" said Shelby, looking surprised. "An older guy?"
"Age doesn't matter," protested Doreen, standing up. "You yourself said it."
"Yeah but I never expected you to have an interest in an older guy. It's just so... wow."
"Uh-huh."
So they sat there, talking until Shelby decided to go home. After she did, Doreen closed the door and sighed again, thinking about the conversation she just had. Her head was spinning with questions but she doesn't know if she dared to ask them.

Doreen closed the door to her apartment and sighed happily. She's finally going out with Luke! Well, it wasn't exactly a date cos his brother is coming but she doesn't care.
She showered and after showering, put on a bathrobe and opened her closet. What to wear what to wear she thought.
She pulled out a black dress. Nah, too poshy. She pulled out a dark green flowy skirt and a baby blue blouse. Looks ok she thought and laid it out on the bed. She then put on the outfit and after putting a few finishing touches, she picked up her purse and closed her apartment door.

Just as soon as Doreen closed the door to her apartment, her cell phone rang. Not bothering looking at the caller ID, she thought it was NYPD and, feeling irritated, flipped it open.
"Valenti," she snapped, putting her purse down.
"Whoa, grumpy much?" came a surprised voice. It was Gina, her sister.
"Oh, sorry."
"What's up with the grumpy tone? Was your date bad?"
"No, I thought NYPD was calling me and - hey, how did you know I was on a date?"
"Shelby told me."
"Right."
Doreen made a mental note to handcuff Shelby to a streetlight the next time she sees her.
"So?" asked Gina.
"So what?"
"How was your date?"
"Despite my grumpiness, it was... great."
"Oh really?"
"Yeah."
"Well; tell me! Where did you two go? What did you do after that?"
Smiling, Doreen told her everything; how they had to sneak off to Burger King when they found out that the place was too poshy. She also told Gina about the cab ride.
"Did you two kiss?" Gina asked suddenly.
"Well..."
"Oh my God; you did, didn't you?"
"Shut up."
"You totally did; admit it!"
"Good night."
With that she flipped her phone close. Several minutes later she received a text message. It was from Gina. Doreen smiled. Even though Gina's the older sister, she sometimes act as if she's a little girl. With that, she cleaned up and changed into her pyjamas.
As she laid in bed, she played back the events from her date. She smiled to herself. She admitted; she enjoyed it, especially the last part. After several minutes, she drifted off to sleep.
