Sam stood for the window, looking at the skyline of a city she loved. She turned around and looked around in her apartment. It wasn't that big, but also not small. Average. In front of her was a glass coffeetable, standing on a white carpet. At the right side stood two white chairs, at the left a black couch against a wall. She'd used a lot of white and black, so the apartment'd look bigger. Behind the white chairs stood a dinner table with four chairs, black. And the kitchen. Behind a wall of the kitchen was the bedroom, and behind thát was the bathroom. Sam walked over to her tv, standing next to the couch, so you could see it from both the white chairs and the dinner table. She turned it on and watched the news. Nothing interesting. She turned off the tv again and grabbed her laptop from the dinner table, to read her e-mail. But no luck; no e-mails. Sam walked to the bookcase standing against the wall next to the tv. She smiled when she saw one of the books. Genetics for Dummies. Her ex-boyfriend had given it to her after she got a job as Questioned Documents employee at the Crime Lab. He didn't understand Questioned Documents had nothing to do with genetics. She grabbed a book called 'Forensic Psychology - volume 1' and walked over to one of the white chairs to read it. The sun set while Samantha read the book. Just another day at the Noir residence.

Sam got up and walked over to her kitchen, to make herself a cup of coffee. Damn, she was tired. She noticed the sun outside was gone, replaced by darkness that never was full darkness in a city like New York. Ah, tomorrow the course again; Forensic Psychoanalysis. She took it because she'd always been interested in psychology, and since she had become an employee of the local crime lab, that interest had grown. She had this shadowy past when it came to forged documents, and the experience she had gained made her prefer Questioned Documents over Forensic Psychoanalysis. But if she'd be some kind of expert on both, she knew she would feel better herself. She had this strange love for learning new things. Although she'd never admit it, she wanted to learn everything to hide herself from not knowing things. Fear of failure, perhaps? She did not know. Nor did she want to. But she had to stop thinking about this. This wasn't good for her. THe doorbell rang. Sam walked to the door and peered through the spyhole. Who'd visit her at this hour?

'Lizzy!' Sam said. It was Lizzy who was visiting her. Her old high school best friend. Sam opened the door. 'Sam!' 'Lizzy!' 'Gosh, you changed. Look at you. You look great!' 'Thanks Lizzy! You look great too! Come on in' Lizzy entered the apartment and looked around. 'Gosh, nice place Sam. Nice view. Wow! Check out that bookcase. Filled with books, of course. What scientific stuff is it about?' Sam laughed when she looked at Lizzy. Nothing changed at all. Still the blond haired, popular girl she remembered. In high school she never understood why Lizzy wanted to be best friends with her, but she understood now. Lizzy was just a sweet girl. 'I'm a forensic scientist. Questioned documents.' 'Oooh' Lizzy turned around. 'Like that stuff on Discovery?' 'Something like that. You want a cup of coffee or something?' 'Nah, thank you.' 'Hmm' Sam sat down on the couch. After Lizzy had examined every piece of furniture at Sam's apartment, so did she. 'So, what brings you here, Lizzy?' Sam asked. Lizzy smiled. But Sam noticed something. 'You're not happy, Lizzy. What's wrong?' 'Well, I got kicked out of my house. So I moved all the way to New York. But the point is, I have nowhere to stay. Can I please stay with you?' 'Of course you can!' Sam said. 'But where did you live before you got here then?' 'Everywhere and nowhere. Thank you so much for letting me stay here.' 'Yeah, no problem. How have you found me in a city with this many people?' 'Well, that was easy. Just went by all Noirs in the phone book.' 'What if I was married?' 'I don't know. I guess I wouldn't have found you then. Again Sam, thank you so much for letting me stay here.' 'Sure' Sam smiled. 'Any time'.

*Two weeks later*
'So, what are you going to do now?' Sam asked while she looked at Lizzy at the other side of the table. 'I mean, you've been here for two weeks now, and you have found a nice place to stay.' Lizzy shook her head. 'I dunno. I guess I should go there.' 'But?' 'I didn't say but' 'You meant to' Lizzy sighed. 'It's so lonely.' Sam also sighed. 'Lizzy, you can't stay here forever. You have a great job as a freelance reporter now, you have found a place to stay and I - well, let's say I'm not used to have people around for two whole weeks' 'You're kicking me out' Sam sighed again. 'I'm not. Not really. But, yes - I think you have to move today or tomorrow or soon at least. I don't want you to think I'm kicking you out' 'You're kicking me out. Fine. If I'm such a nuisance, I'll go immediately, so I won't bother you anymore. Good bye, Samantha Noir!' Sam did nothing to stop Lizzy from packing her stuff or leaving. She just sat at the table. She never had been a morning person and was still a bit sleepy. Even the breakfast hadn't woken her properly. The loud 'bang' of the apartment door Lizzy slammed shut did the trick - she was awake now. Poor Lizzy. Had she been too hard to her?

Sam felt really bad. She KNEW she had been to hard to Lizzy, but Lizzy never knew when she was too much. She hoped Lizzy wouldn't want too much revenge, but knowing her, she would. Sam got up and walked over to the window, looking down to see the street. The traffic was as fast as possible in this city. People the size of ants walked up and down the streets. She felt like taking a walk. She felt like spending money. She felt like - shopping. Sam grabbed her purse, her coat and her shoes and got out of her apartment. She took the elevator down and walked out of the building into the liveliness outside. It did her well. She raised her hand for a cab and felt how a raindrop fell on her head. Another one followed this almost immediately. She smiled. Rain. She liked rain when she felt not in the mood for sunshine. A taxi stopped and she got in. 'To the mall'.

Sam just walked, looking at the other people spending money like there was no tomorrow. Maybe she should buy something too. Shopping therapy. But maybe not. She didn't know. She felt bad. She looked at her watch. Oh, -beep-, she had to go to work. She ordered a cab and went. Maybe she would go back here again after work. Or tomorrow. She'd see.

Sma returned to her apartment after she had left Brian and Rhia at the hospital. She tossed her shoes and coat on the floor and lied down on the couch. She was tired. Then, a thought. Lizzy. How could she have done that! Sam felt like smashing something, but calmed down and sat up straight. She then walked over to the kitchen to pour herself some diet coke. On her way, she grabbed her laptop she had left on the dinner table. She never had to turn it on because she always let it on. Sam hadn't visited her e-mail in quite a while, but she found out she had just two e-mails waiting. And one of those was trash. The other one turned out to be from her dad. She opened it.
"Hey Sam, How're you doing, there in New York City? I'm fine here. That song you sent me is great! It's the theme song from National Treasure, isn't it? I got some new DVDs. When will you come to the Netherlands again? Love, Dad"
Sam smiled and clicked 'Answer'.
"Hey dad, I'm fine too. Just had a heavy case. Yeah, it's the theme song. What kind of DVDs you got? I will not get there for at least a few months. Maybe next year. Can I stay at your place then? Love, Sam"
Sam put her laptop on one of the white chairs. Then she turned on the tv, just in time to catch the end of the news.
' - PD caught the abductors'
Sam switched channels. Soap-operas, she hated those. An uninteresting documentary. Finally, she discovered an old episode of 'Friends' shown on one of the channels. Well, that was always fun watching. She put the remote control on the coffee table and just watched the tvscreen.

'Oh my god!' Sam suddenly sat up straight. She noticed the tv was still on, and the sun outside... was there. A new day in a new week of work had started. The last week she hadn't had a lot of work in the lab, and she somewhat expected she'd have more work now. Her watch told her it was half past seven in the morning. She turned off the tv, made herself some breakfast and redressed herself. Then, she went outside for a morning walk.

The wind that blew through the streets of New York woke her up properly. It was good for her to be outside for a while, breathe in some fresh air (as far as that was possible in NY) and let her mind wander. She knew Brian just had been released from the hospital. So that meant he was just okay. Apart from the horror he had gone through and from which he would suffer for the rest of his life. They, all the lab techs and the CSIs, had fought for Brian. But he had fought for his life. And he had gone through all the horror. She couldn't do anything but appreciate, no, admire it. Slowly, the sun became visible and Sam felt the warmth of the rays on her face. She had always loved the sun. She hadn't moved to Miami for nothing, those years ago. But now she lived in New York. Because of some crazy accusation that was not true. At least, not from her point of view. She walked on, while kicking a stone. Miami. She had been accused of forgery and fired for it. She hadn't told anyone here about it, just Luke knew and that was only because he was the one who hired her. For her, the accusation wasn't true. From her point of view, she had never messed with official documents. Yes, of course she had been involved in forgery in her youth. Writing fake doctor's notes to skip PE, writing notes bearing her mum's autograph with an explanation why she hadn't done her homework, faking school cards to get access to rooms only the last years or older students had access to. But nothing too serious. And then, when that accusation came, the lab supervisor down in Miami had been so angry with her. She had never seen him angry, but he certainly was then. She had explained she had nothing to do with it, and he had promised her he would investigate it. Turned out he still had to fire her, but at least he could prevent her from getting a rap sheet. And now she was here. In New York. No problems with forgery accusations or getting fired for something she hadn't done. At least, so far. Sam felt a tear roll down her cheek. Goddamn the one who'd framed her! She kicked a trash can, that fell over. Yay. Now that. She had been brought up as a good girl and she realized she had to put the trash back in the can. As she did, she felt how her anger faded away. There was nothing she could've done about the accusation and she now had friends here. Good friends. Friends she loved. Friends she cared about. She checked her watch. Good. She still had time to walk back to her apartment and to do something about her appearance. She probably looked a mess now. Good thing not too many people were outside this time of day. Especially not many people she knew. She didn't want them to see her like this, looking such a mess. Sam really wasn't vain; she just took care of herself. Most of the time. As the situation allowed her to.

When she got back to her apartment, she noticed the time the clock indicated. She quickly made her hair look a little less messy and she did some other things about how she looked. Okay, now she could go. She rushed out of her apartment, to her car, to go to the lab. Today she would start a bit earlier than usual. Maybe she could discuss to work longer each day, to be able to do more in one day. But she would worry about that later.

Sam opened up her apartment door and walked in. Headache. She sat down on the couch and thought about the recent case. So James was now - finally - behind bars and she had told the truth. Yes, IAB had forced Luke to suspend her, but she was glad she wasn't fired. Just a while before she would get back to the lab. Just a while.

But the suspension had given her time to finally finish her forensic psycho-analysis course. Sam grabbed her books from the bookcase and opened them. Ah, Sigmund Freud's theory of the Id, Ego and Superego. The theory that when one of those, Id being the primitive desires, Superego containing the norms, morality and taboos and Ego being the one that makes sure it goes well, are out of balance, a person can get criminal. Interesting. Sutherland's theory that one person who is criminal has enough influence on other persons to make them criminal. The theory that out-of-control family life makes kids criminal. Very interesting. Sam looked at the calender. Oh, well that's a coincidence. She could do the exam tomorrow if she wanted to. Why not try it? She had time enough anyway.

*after the exam*
Wow. That hadn't been a hard exam at all. If she passed, she would officially be able to make an educated guess on what kind of person a perp may be. Sure, it had been just a course and not a full study, because a study in Forensic Psychoanalysis could take up to ten years, though the average was six, but she could make an educated guess now. And they could always call in a real expert. The only threat there was, was that Sam might be going to make an educated guess on EVERYTHING. But she had to take that risk and just try it.

Immidiately when Sam woke up, few days later, she thought about the lab. Since she was suspended, she wouldn't be able to go there. She decided to head to Central Park. On her way out of the apartment complex, she picked up her mail. Two letters, one being a bill she had paid the day before and one being the result of her exam. Nervous, she opened it. Did she pass?
She did. With only a couple of errors in Sutherland's theory, she had passed the test with 90%.
Happily, she stopped a cab and asked for Central Park.

Sam opened the door of her apartment. Quietly, in order not to wake her neighbors, she kicked out her shoes, hung her coat on a hook and laid her keys on a small side table. The apartment appeared dark for there wasn't a light on, but Sam immediately switched on a small lamp and the apartment bathed in a sea of orange-ish light. Sam sighed and walked over to her kitchenette. The microwave told her it was late in the evening, or perhaps early in the morning. Whatever. She poured herself a glass of water and took a sip while she looked at her apartment. It was a mess. Tomorrow, she would tidy it and vacuum it and clean it. No matter what, she would do some house work tomorrow. Sam was happy. Jewels had been great, going there with her friend and at the same time colleagues. She'd have to thank Rhia for inviting her for this great evening. In a few days, she'd return at the lab, getting back to work. Sam put her glass in the dishwasher and turned it on. Then she walked over to the lamp, turned it off, went to her bed room and changed into her pajamas. "Good night New York" was the last thing she whispered, before she fell asleep.
